History
The forerunner of today's Tootsie Roll Industries was founded in 1896 by Austrian immigrant Leo Hirschfield in a small shop in New York City. Like so many other confectioners of his day, Hirschfield was hard put by the problem of chocolate melting in the hot summer months and became convinced that he must create a viable chocolate alternative. To this end, he invented the "Tootsie Roll" a compact, chocolate-flavored (but not chocolate) confection that simply would not melt, at least not as readily as chocolate. Named for his own pet affectation for his daughter, the Tootsie Roll quickly became as popular as Leo had hoped and he kept innovating. In 1931, the tootsie pop was born and quickly became popular with displaced refugees of the dust bowl in New York City for its unique qualities and cheap price.
Today, Tootsie Roll is one of the United States' largest candy manufacturers, with distribution in over 75 countries. Rediscover why Americans first fell in love with Tootsie today at Candy.com!
