History
Mark Avenue in Scranton, PA was where Gertrude Hawk made her home and it was in that home that she created the world's first Mark Avenue chocolates in 1936. Friends and neighbors were soon sniffing around for the delicious creations and Gertrude began to build a reputation as her sweets were used to raise money for local charities and fundraisers. When her son Elmer returned from the service at the end of the second world war, he invested his pay in his mother's fledgling company, allowing her to purchase mechanical equipment and expand her business.
When the construction of an interstate bridge threatened to level her Mark Avenue home, Gertrude decided she'd outgrown Scranton and moved to Dunmore, PA where she built a combination factory, restaurant and retail store that can still be found producing delectable Mark Avenue sweets today.
