History
Etienne Guittard and Domenico Ghirardelli had a great deal in common. Both were immigrants who were attracted to the San Franisco area as a result of the gold rush of 1849, both had an enterprising spirit and firm resolve and both found that trade in chocolate suited them better than trade in gold.
Established in 1868, Guittard Chocolate was sold for the first time out of a San Francisco storefront and immediately built on the reputation for fine, European style chocolate of which wealthy miners from the gold camps were already well acquainted. If it weren't for the earthquake of 1906, Guittard Chocolate might be operated out of the original building today. Yet, despite the setback of the loss of their headquarters, Guittard soldiered on and continue to be family owned and operated to this day.
